Vitreous Enamel Steel Sheet: Base Steel Requirements for Cookware & Appliance Panels
What base steel does vitreous enameling require?
Direct answer: enamel-grade steel must have extremely low carbon — typically decarburized or titanium-stabilized — so hydrogen-induced fish-scaling and CO blistering do not occur during firing at roughly 800-850°C. It must also resist sagging at firing temperature so panels keep flatness.
| Requirement | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Very low C (decarburized / Ti-stabilized) | Prevents CO gas blisters during firing |
| Fish-scale resistance | Hydrogen entry during pickling causes scales that pop off after enameling |
| Hot sag resistance | Panel stays flat at 800-850°C firing |
| Clean, uniform surface | Frit wets evenly; fewer pinholes |
Typical products
Bathtubs, cookware bodies, oven liners, splashbacks, architectural enamel panels and BBQ grates.
MESCO supply
Enamel steel sheet and coil under the Enamel Steel Sheet category, thickness and width matched to your press and firing line, with grade certificates per shipment.

If your enamel panels blister or show fish-scaling, the base steel grade — not your frit — is the usual suspect.
