Electrical Silicon Steel Sheet & Coil (GO & NGO)
Grain oriented and non-grain oriented electrical steel in low-core-loss grades, insulated and precision slit for transformer cores, motor laminations and generator stators.
Overview
MESCO supplies electrical silicon steel - the soft magnetic material at the heart of every transformer, motor and generator. Our range covers grain oriented (GO) grades for high-efficiency transformer cores and non-grain oriented (NGO) grades for rotating machines, each selected and tested for core loss, permeability and insulation quality.
Material is supplied as full coils, slit strips, cut sheets or Epstein test strips, with mill certificates and magnetic property data for every heat. Backed by 19 years of specialty steel supply to customers in more than 60 countries, including 9 Fortune 500 companies, MESCO understands that efficiency classes rise and fall on core loss - so we verify it before your laminations are ever cut.
What Is Electrical Silicon Steel?
Electrical steel is a low-carbon iron-silicon alloy (typically 1.5-3.5% Si). Silicon raises electrical resistivity, which suppresses eddy currents and lowers core loss. In grain oriented steel, controlled rolling and annealing align the crystal grains in the rolling direction, giving exceptionally low loss for transformer cores that magnetize along one axis. Non-grain oriented steel has random grain structure, delivering uniform magnetic properties in all directions for motor and generator laminations that rotate.

Key Features & Benefits
- Low core loss: verified P15/50 values that help transformers and motors meet Tier efficiency regulations.
- High permeability: strong B50 induction for compact core designs and lower exciting current.
- Insulated surface: C-2, C-3 or C-4 coatings 0.9-3.5 um thick for interlaminar resistance without affecting stacking factor.
- Precision gauge: tight thickness tolerance keeps lamination stacks and core dimensions predictable.
- Slit-to-width service: burr-controlled slitting for direct feeding of high-speed lamination presses.
- Full traceability: heat numbers and magnetic test certificates with every shipment.

Applications
- Distribution and power transformer cores (GO)
- Induction motor and servo motor laminations (NGO)
- Generator stators and rotor cores (NGO)
- Reactors, chokes and ballast cores (GO)
- EV drive motor and alternator laminations (high-grade NGO)
Quality Control
Every coil is traced to its heat number and mill certificate. Magnetic properties are verified by Epstein frame or single sheet tester sampling, including core loss at 1.5 T/50 Hz, induction B50 or B800, and insulation resistance between laminations. Geometry - thickness, crown, flatness and camber - is checked to lamination-press standards, and slit edges are inspected for burr so tooling wear stays predictable.

FAQ
Should I choose GO or NGO silicon steel?
Use grain oriented steel when flux flows in one direction - transformer cores and reactors. Use non-grain oriented steel for rotating machines where flux rotates - motors and generators.
What does a grade like 30Q130 mean?
30 means 0.30 mm thickness; Q denotes grain oriented; 130 is the maximum core loss in W/kg at 1.7 T and 50 Hz. Lower numbers mean higher efficiency.
Can you supply strips cut to my lamination width?
Yes. We slit to width with burr control, typically from 40 mm upward, ready for direct press feeding.
Which coating should I specify?
C-2 for most transformers, C-3 where stress-relief annealing is avoided, C-4 for motors needing higher interlaminar resistance. We can advise per design.
Is test data provided with shipments?
Yes - mill certificates plus magnetic property test reports accompany every shipment, with heat-level traceability.
