Product Structure

Al-Si Coating Structure

Aluminized silicon steel features a hot-dip applied aluminum-silicon alloy coating bonded to steel substrate via an intermetallic alloy layer. Understanding the structure helps specify the correct product.

Why Silicon is Added

Pure aluminum coatings form thick, brittle Fe-Al intermetallic layers during hot-dip processing. Adding 8–11% silicon dramatically slows this reaction, producing a thinner, more ductile alloy layer that greatly improves formability and coating adhesion.

The silicon also lowers the melting point of the coating bath (~577°C vs 660°C for pure Al), enabling better process control and smoother, more uniform coatings.

Silicon content: 8–11% by weight in coating
Total coating thickness: typically 20–60 μm per side
Intermetallic layer: Fe₂Al₅ + FeAl₃ (thin, hard)
Both sides coated (Type 1) unless specified
