PPGL Steel Coil & Sheet (Prepainted Galvalume)
PPGL Steel Coil & Sheet (Prepainted Galvalume)
Aluminum-zinc coated steel with baked-on polyester or PVDF paint, combining the corrosion resistance of galvalume with the aesthetics of prepainted steel.
Overview
MESCO supplies PPGL (Prepainted Galvalume Steel) coil and sheet for roofing, wall cladding, sandwich panels, downpipes and building accessories. PPGL starts with a galvalume (GL) substrate — steel coated with an aluminum-zinc alloy (typically 55% Al, 43.4% Zn, 1.6% Si) — which is then cleaned, pretreated and painted on a continuous coil coating line. The result combines the long-term corrosion resistance of galvalume with the decorative finish and color stability of prepainted steel.
Produced from our own substrate and painted under controlled line conditions, our PPGL delivers consistent coating weight, uniform paint film and stable color across coils. With 19 years of steel experience and exports to more than 60 countries, MESCO is a dependable source for construction material suppliers and building product manufacturers.
What Is PPGL Steel?
PPGL stands for Pre-Painted Galvalume. The base metal is galvalume steel, protected by a metallic aluminum-zinc coating that offers 2-4 times the corrosion resistance of conventional galvanized steel. On top of the metallic coating, a paint system — typically polyester (PE), silicon modified polyester (SMP), or polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) — is applied in a precise two-coat or three-coat process. The paint layer can be printed with wood grain, stone patterns or custom designs.
Because the metallic coating protects even where the paint is scratched or cut, PPGL is especially suited to roofing and cladding exposed to rain, salt and UV. The cut edges self-protect through the zinc-aluminum galvanic action, preventing red rust from spreading.
Coating Structure
| Layer | Material | Typical Thickness | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top coat | Polyester / SMP / PVDF | 15 - 30 µm | Color, gloss, UV and weathering resistance |
| Primer | Epoxy / polyester primer | 5 - 10 µm | Adhesion and corrosion barrier |
| Metallic coating | 55% Al-Zn (GL) | AZ55 - AZ150 | Long-term corrosion protection |
| Substrate | Cold rolled steel base | 0.25 - 1.2 mm | Structural strength and formability |
Key Features & Benefits
- Superior corrosion resistance: the aluminum-zinc metallic layer protects cut edges and scratches, preventing rust spread.
- Long paint life: PVDF and SMP topcoats resist chalking and fading in harsh sun and coastal air.
- Formable without cracking: engineered paint systems follow roll forming, bending and profiling.
- Decorative options: solid colors, wood grain, stone prints and custom designs on request.
- Low maintenance: self-cleaning smooth surfaces reduce dirt adhesion and washing cycles.
- Cost-effective: one product delivers both protection and finish, saving painting and maintenance costs.

Applications
- Metal roofing sheets and ridge caps for residential and industrial buildings
- Wall cladding and facade panels
- Sandwich panel faces for cold storage and cleanrooms
- Rainwater gutters, downpipes and flashing profiles
- Grain silos, portable buildings and agricultural structures
Quality Control
Every PPGL coil is tested for coating weight (T-bend, impact), paint film thickness, adhesion (cross-cut and boiling water), gloss, color difference (ΔE) and hardness (pencil test). Salt spray testing is carried out on the metallic coating and the finished paint system, and each shipment includes a mill test certificate. We can arrange SGS or other third-party inspection before dispatch.

FAQ
What is the difference between PPGL and PPGI?
PPGL uses a galvalume (aluminum-zinc) substrate for superior corrosion resistance, while PPGI uses galvanized (zinc) substrate. PPGL is preferred for roofing and coastal applications.
What paint system is best for coastal areas?
PVDF or high-durability polyester (HDP) offers the best resistance to salt and UV. We recommend these for marine environments.
Can PPGL be cut without edge rust?
Yes. The aluminum-zinc metallic coating provides galvanic protection at cut edges, preventing rust from spreading inward.
Do you supply custom printed wood grain?
Yes. We offer wood grain, stone and custom print finishes on PPGL substrates.
What is the minimum order quantity?
Trial coils are available. Volume pricing depends on gauge, color and quantity.
