PPGL Steel Coil & Sheet (Prepainted Galvalume)
Color prepainted steel on an AZ50-AZ150 aluminum-zinc galvalume substrate, with PE, SMP, HDP and PVDF paint systems for roofing, cladding and appliance applications.
Overview
MESCO supplies PPGL - prepainted galvalume steel - the color coated steel that pairs the sacrificial and barrier protection of an aluminum-zinc coating with factory-applied paint. The AZ substrate protects cut edges and scratches, while the coil-coated paint system delivers long-lasting color for metal roofing, wall cladding, garage doors and appliance panels.
With 19 years in coated flat steel and exports to more than 60 countries, MESCO runs PPGL on controlled coil-coating lines where pretreatment, primer, top coat and back coat are applied and cured in one pass. The result is batch-consistent color, film weight and adhesion, documented with QC records on every coil delivered to our customers including 9 Fortune 500 companies.
What Is PPGL Steel?
PPGL (Prepainted Galvalume) is steel sheet coated with an aluminum-zinc alloy (typically 55% Al - 43.4% Zn - 1.6% Si), then painted on a continuous coil coating line before forming. Compared with PPGI (prepainted galvanized), the galvalume substrate offers several times better corrosion resistance and better heat reflectivity, which extends paint life in aggressive environments. The paint system is selected by exposure: polyester for standard buildings, silicone-modified polyester (SMP) for stronger UV, and HDP or PVDF for the longest color and gloss retention.
Coating Structure
| Layer | Material | Thickness | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top coat | PE / SMP / HDP / PVDF paint | 15-20 um | Color, UV and weather resistance |
| Primer | Epoxy or polyester primer | 5-8 um | Adhesion and corrosion barrier |
| Substrate coating | 55% Al-Zn alloy (AZ50-AZ150) | 36-108 g/m2 per side | Sacrificial edge protection |
| Base steel | DX51D+AZ to DX53D+AZ | 0.2 - 1.5 mm | Formability and strength |
| Back coat | Protective backer | 5-8 um | Interior corrosion protection |
Key Features & Benefits
- Long service life: PVDF systems deliver 20+ year color and gloss performance; PE delivers proven 10-year service at lower cost.
- Edge self-protection: the AZ coating heals cut edges and screw holes, where paint-only systems fail first.
- Heat reflectivity: galvalume's high reflectivity reduces attic heat build-up under metal roofs.
- Consistent color: continuous coil coating produces large-area color uniformity impossible with post-painting.
- Ready to form: coils are painted before corrugating or roll forming, so profiles come out fully finished.
- Custom colors: full RAL range plus color matching against samples or color cards.

Send your project details - environment, expected life, color and profile - and our team will recommend the substrate coating weight and paint system, then supply color samples for approval before production.
Applications
- Standing seam and corrugated metal roofing for industrial and residential buildings
- Wall cladding, fascia and composite panel faces
- Garage doors, roller shutters and sectional doors
- Air-conditioning housings and outdoor equipment cabinets
- Cold-storage and agricultural building envelopes
Quality Control
PPGL quality is built into the line: coil surfaces are cleaned and conversion-coated before priming, and dry-film thickness is monitored continuously on both sides. Every batch passes T-bend, reverse impact, pencil hardness, MEK resistance and adhesion tests, with salt spray and QUVA accelerated weathering available per project. Color is checked against the approved master with spectrophotometer records shipped with the coil.

FAQ
PPGL versus PPGI - which one do I need?
PPGL (galvalume substrate) resists corrosion better and reflects more heat, so it is preferred near coasts, in polluted air and under intense sun. PPGI (galvanized substrate) is an economical choice for mild environments.
Which paint system should I choose for a 20-year roof?
PVDF or HDP systems give the longest color and gloss retention. SMP is a mid-life option, and PE covers standard 10-year expectations at the lowest cost.
Can PPGL be roll formed after painting?
Yes - that is exactly how it is designed. The paint system is formulated for the bending radii of standard roofing and cladding profiles.
What coating weight do you recommend?
AZ100-AZ150 for coastal or industrial environments, AZ60-AZ100 for general construction, and AZ50 for interior or mild exposures.
Do you supply slit strips and small coils?
Yes. We slit to your width and supply small coils or cut sheets for trial and production orders.
