MESCO supplies ultra-thin stainless steel foil from 0.02 to 0.10 mm in 304, 316L and 430 grades (301 and 321 on request). Foil is produced by precision cold rolling under tight thickness control (±0.003 mm), then bright annealed to restore ductility and supply an oxide-free, reflective surface. Width is slit to size from 10 mm up to 600 mm, supplied as pancake coil or spool for electronics, shielding, gaskets, flexible current collectors and medical device applications.

Specifications & Capabilities

Common Grades & Selection

  • 304 — general-purpose austenitic, good formability and corrosion resistance
  • 316L — enhanced chloride resistance, medical and marine suitability
  • 430 — ferritic, magnetic, lower cost for shielding and EMI applications
  • 301 / 321 — higher strength or high-temperature options on request

Thickness & Width Capabilities

  • Thickness 0.02 – 0.10 mm standard (down to 0.01 mm on request)
  • Width 10 – 600 mm slit to size from master coil
  • Master coil ID 200 / 300 / 400 mm; OD up to 600 mm
  • Thickness tolerance ±0.003 mm for ≤0.05 mm foil

Surface Finish — Bright Annealed (BA)

  • BA produced in protective atmosphere → oxide-free, mirror surface
  • Suitable for direct use without further polishing
  • 2B finish available for cost-sensitive applications
  • Optional electropolishing for ultra-smooth, sanitary surface

Applications

  • Electronics — battery tabs, fuel cell plates, EMI/RFI shielding
  • Gaskets — spiral wound, kammprofile and cut gaskets
  • Medical — surgical components, diagnostic strips
  • Flexible current collectors — supercapacitor and Li-ion battery foils
  • Decorative — automotive trim and luxury packaging inserts

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the thinnest foil you can supply?

Standard production range is 0.02 to 0.10 mm. For development or pilot projects we can produce down to 0.01 mm on request, with longer lead time and higher per-kg price. Below 0.02 mm the foil is typically considered 'ultra-thin strip' rather than 'foil'.

304 vs 316L foil for medical use?

316L is preferred for medical and implant-related applications due to its lower nickel sensitivity, higher pitting resistance in body fluids, and better biocompatibility after electropolishing and passivation. 304 is acceptable for non-implant medical devices such as surgical instrument wraps and diagnostic test strips.

Do you supply pancake coils?

Yes. Foil can be supplied as pancake coils (single-layer wound, easier to unwind in automated lines) or as level-wound spools on plastic or steel cores. Pancake OD is typically 200-400 mm; spool lengths up to 5000 m depending on dimensions.

What is the MOQ and lead time?

Standard MOQ is 50 kg per specification (grade, thickness, width, finish). Stock items ship within 7-10 days; custom thickness, width or grade requires 25-35 days. Sample coils (5-10 kg) are available on request for qualification.
