Specifications & Capabilities

Grade Comparison — 409 vs 439 vs 304

  • 409 — ferritic, 11% Cr, economical, good high-temperature oxidation resistance
  • 439 — ferritic, 18% Cr, better weldability and corrosion than 409
  • 304 — austenitic, 18% Cr / 8% Ni, premium corrosion and appearance
  • Aluminized 409 / 441 — Al-Si coating adds salt-spray corrosion resistance

Aluminized vs Stainless for Exhaust

  • Aluminized carbon steel — lower cost, up to 5 years salt-spray life
  • Stainless 409 — 8-10 years life, suitable for most passenger car mufflers
  • Stainless 439 / 304 — 10-15+ years life, premium and heavy-duty service
  • Choose aluminized for cost-sensitive aftermarket; stainless for OEM warranty

Forming — Round / Oval / Mandrel-Bend

  • Round tube — standard muffler body and resonator
  • Oval tube — flat-form muffler, better ground clearance
  • Mandrel bending — constant OD, no wrinkles at bend radius
  • Bend radius typically 1.5 × OD, mandrel and induction bending available

Weldability & Corrosion Resistance

  • 409 requires preheat (150-200 °C) for thick-wall welding
  • 439 has better weldability; lower risk of HAZ grain growth
  • 304 welds with standard austenitic procedures (TIG / MIG)
  • All tubes pickled and passivated for consistent corrosion performance

Frequently Asked Questions

409 vs 439 — which is better for mufflers?

439 offers better corrosion resistance and weldability than 409 thanks to its higher Cr content (18% vs 11%) and Ti/Nb stabilization. For long-life OEM mufflers exposed to salt and moisture, 439 is recommended. For cost-sensitive aftermarket and warm-climate use, 409 is acceptable.

Are aluminized tubes available?

Yes. We supply aluminized Type 1 (Al-Si, ~10% Si) coating on 409 and 441 substrates per ASTM A463. Aluminized tubes provide 3-5x better salt-spray resistance than uncoated carbon steel and are widely used in aftermarket mufflers and exhaust pipes.

Can you supply mandrel-bent tubes?

Yes. Mandrel bending keeps the inner wall of the bend flat (no wrinkles), which is critical for exhaust gas flow. We offer CNC mandrel bending up to 180° with bend radius from 1.5 × OD. Induction bending is also available for large-diameter tubes with thin walls.

What is the typical wall thickness?

Common wall thicknesses are 1.2, 1.5, 1.65, 2.0 and 2.5 mm. For OEM passenger car mufflers, 1.2-1.5 mm is standard. Heavy-duty truck and industrial exhaust typically use 2.0-2.5 mm walls for vibration and corrosion margin.
