Overview
The Y-post gets its name from the Y-shaped cross-section formed by a central web and two flanged wings that taper to a point at the bottom. The flanges give the post its characteristic rigidity when driven into the ground and also create the ribs along which the punched locating holes sit, allowing plain wire, barbed wire, hinge joint mesh and electric fence tape to be fixed without separate fasteners. Because Q355 is a hot-rolled structural grade with controlled mechanical properties, the section can be roll-formed cleanly, the spear point holds its shape during driving, and the post remains straight under repeated load cycles.
What Is a Y-Post (Star Picket)?
A Y-post is a roll-formed steel fence post with a Y-shape in cross-section, a pressed spear point at the base for manual or post-driver installation, and a series of pre-punched holes along the web for wire and mesh fixing. Y-posts are commonly known as star pickets in Australia, waratahs in New Zealand, and fence stakes in the United States. They are designed to be driven directly into the ground using a manual post driver or a pneumatic post driver, eliminating the need for digging, concrete or anchor blocks in most soil types.
The flanged Y-section gives the post three stiffening ribs, which is why the same weight of steel per metre produces a stiffer post than a round or square section. This is particularly valuable in livestock fencing, where the post has to absorb impact from animals pressing against the line wire and yet flex enough to recover without permanent deformation.

Substrate and Specification Options
Standard Q355 hot-rolled strip is the typical substrate. Where the project calls for additional corrosion performance in coastal, livestock manure or acidic soil environments, the same Y-section can be supplied in ZAM (zinc-aluminum-magnesium) coated strip or with a heavier hot-dip galvanizing class. The web and flange thickness are held to a uniform nominal value along the post length so that the driving behaviour remains consistent from the first post to the last.
For high-cycle installations such as highway boundary fencing or vineyard trellis lines, we recommend the heavier coating classes and a tighter hole pattern. For temporary fencing such as construction site hoardings, the standard coating and pattern are typically sufficient. Painted topcoats over galvanized (duplex system) can be supplied when colour coding of fence lines is needed.
