Overview

MESCO supplies PVDF color coated aluminium coil as a complete coil-to-finished-panel solution. The coil is coated with a fluorocarbon (PVDF) paint system, then cured through a continuous coil-coating line so the paint film bonds to the aluminium substrate as one integrated surface. The result is a pre-painted aluminium coil that can be slit, levelled, profiled and installed without any further painting step on site.

This product is designed for exterior surfaces that must hold their colour and gloss for years under strong sunlight, rain, salt air and temperature cycling. Because the coating is applied and cured under factory-controlled conditions, film thickness and adhesion consistency are far better than field-applied paint. MESCO delivers this coil with a documented test report covering adhesion, hardness, impact, solvent resistance, humidity, salt spray and accelerated UV ageing.

What Is a PVDF Color Coated Aluminium Coil?

PVDF stands for polyvinylidene fluoride, a fluoropolymer resin used as the principal binder in the topcoat. Unlike polyester (PE) coatings, whose polymer chains break down relatively quickly under ultraviolet radiation, the carbon–fluorine bonds in PVDF resist UV degradation. That chemistry is why PVDF coated aluminium is specified for architectural work where colour retention and chalk resistance matter over a long service life.

The coating is built in layers. Each layer has a defined job, and each layer has a minimum dry film thickness that must be met for the system to perform as specified.

Coating Layer Structure

PositionLayerDry Film Thickness
Top facePrimer5 µm
Topcoat (PVDF)20–22 µm
Back facePrimer5 µm
Back coat5 µm

The primer provides adhesion and corrosion inhibition at the metal interface. The topcoat carries the pigment and delivers the colour, gloss and weather resistance. The back coat protects the reverse side during forming and installation and prevents marking when coils are stacked or stored.

Key Features

Fluorocarbon Weather Resistance

The PVDF topcoat retains colour and gloss far longer than standard polyester systems under continuous UV exposure, making it suitable for exterior architectural surfaces.

Verified Adhesion

Cross-hatch adhesion tested with no film removal, and 1T bend tested with no coating loss — the film survives bending and profiling without flaking.

Hardness and Scratch Resistance

Pencil hardness of HB or harder, plus probe scratch testing at 1000 g load with no ploughing through the film, so the surface resists handling and installation damage.

Chemical and Moisture Resistance

Withstands 5% hydrochloric acid and 5% sodium hydroxide for 24 hours, 100°C boiling water for 2 hours, and 1000 hours in a non-condensing humidity chamber.

Solvent Cure Verification

MEK (butanone) rub test of 100 double rubs with no film damage confirms the coating is fully cured, not merely surface dry.

Colour Matching Service

Custom colour matching is available. Where a requested shade cannot deliver the required weather resistance, a close equivalent colour is proposed instead.

Substrate and Specification Options

Aluminium alloy grade, temper, coil thickness, width, coil weight and inner diameter are produced to order. Rather than publish ranges that may not reflect your project, MESCO confirms the exact specification against your drawing, panel profile and site conditions before production. Send your required alloy, temper, thickness and width and we will confirm availability, lead time and coil dimensions in return.

  • Alloy grade and temper to be confirmed against your project requirement
  • Coil thickness, width, weight and inner diameter produced to order
  • Protective film, interleaving and export packing options available
  • Slitting to finished panel width available before shipment

Applications

PVDF coated aluminium coil is most often specified where a metal surface is permanently visible and must keep its appearance through years of weather exposure.

Architectural Cladding

Facade panels, curtain wall cassettes and rainscreen systems where colour stability and flatness are both required.

Roofing and Elevations

Standing seam roofing, soffits, fascia and louvre systems exposed to sun, rain and coastal air.

  • Aluminium composite panels (ACP) and honeycomb panels
  • Suspended ceilings and interior feature surfaces
  • Signage, advertising boards and display frames
  • Appliance and equipment housings requiring a durable coloured finish
  • Transport and vehicle panelling where a weather-resistant coated surface is needed

Quality Control

Coating performance is verified per batch, not assumed from the paint supplier datasheet. Before shipment, MESCO checks dry film thickness on every run, then performs the adhesion, T-bend, reverse impact, pencil hardness, MEK rub, scratch, humidity, acid and alkali, boiling water, neutral salt spray and UVA-340 ageing tests listed above. Test results are supplied with the shipping documents so your incoming inspection can be matched directly against the specification table.

This matters because a coil that looks correct on delivery can still fail in service if the film is under-cured or under-thickness. The MEK rub test in particular reveals incomplete curing, which a visual check will never show, and the 1T bend test reveals brittle film that would crack when the panel is formed on your press brake.

Why Choose MESCO Steel

Factory-Direct Supply

Coil is supplied directly from production, without trading layers between the coating line and your project.

Documented Batch Testing

Each batch ships with coating test data you can compare against your own specification sheet line by line.

Specification Support

Send your panel profile and site conditions and we confirm the alloy, temper, thickness and coating system that fit the application.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the coating thickness of the PVDF color coated aluminium coil?

On the top face the primer is 5 µm and the PVDF topcoat is 20–22 µm dry film. On the back face the primer is 5 µm and the back coat is 5 µm.

Why specify PVDF instead of polyester coating?

PVDF uses fluoropolymer resin whose carbon–fluorine bonds resist ultraviolet breakdown. That gives markedly better colour and gloss retention than polyester on exterior surfaces under long-term sun exposure.

Can you match a specific colour?

Yes, colour matching service is available. Because some shades cannot meet the required weather resistance with available pigments, a close equivalent colour may be offered in place of the exact shade requested.

How is the coating performance verified?

By cross-hatch adhesion, 1T bend, 9 J reverse impact, pencil hardness, MEK double rub, probe scratch at 1000 g, 1000-hour humidity, 24-hour acid and alkali immersion, 2-hour boiling water, 1000-hour neutral salt spray assessed to ASTM D4214, and 2000 light hours in a UVA-340 chamber.

What information do you need to quote?

Please send the aluminium alloy grade and temper, required coil thickness and width, target coil weight or inner diameter, the colour reference, and the intended application. We will confirm specification, lead time and coil dimensions in return.
